Religious groups in Taiwan are upset with McDonald’s for releasing an ad featuring a young gay man to promote the McCafé brand. In the ad, the young man writes, “I like boys” on the side of a cup. His father leaves the table and then returns to write above his son’s original message, “I accept that you like boys”.
Unsurprisingly, a bunch of conservative groups in Taiwan have voiced their displeasure with the ad. But overall, the ad has been perceived as a surprisingly forward-thinking, liberal move from McDonald’s, especially given how heteronormative their ads have been in the West.
